Tucked inside a Secret Garden

A spirited young professional embarks on a restoration to become the next steward of this century-old home. Originally built in 1904, this subdivided home catered to early 20th century fishermen in the historic district of Santa Monica, California. In collaboration with Architect Tim Barber, we respectfully reconfigured the interior floor plan to accommodate the home for a bustling family of four.

It started with the homeowner's passion for old books & literature, planting the seed for converting a completely underutilized dining room into an enchanting hidden library. Another magical moment was moving the kitchen across the house into the old master bedroom so the family could enjoy the garden view while basking in the warm sunset.

We restored the original windows, dark mahogany flooring, architectural trims, and re-purposed a pair of leaded glass cabinet doors. We reintroduced transom windows, bespoke kitchen cabinets, bookcases and vintage fixtures harmoniously into this historic home. The moody library and kitchen color was inspired by the owner’s Granny’s painting, resembling a forest and the never-ending abyss of deep blue sea. A thoughtful, multi-faceted home with a collection of rooms uniquely telling the story of its own past while looking toward the future.
