A SURFER’S PARADISE
Tropical modernism takes center stage in this Venice Beach house. Against all odds, a young, worldly professional and surf enthusiast saw the potential of restoring this 1920s Spanish Bungalow back to its roots. Sadly, much of its character had been lost in a previous 1990s remodel.
It started with re-configuring the floor plan to improve the circulation of the home, adding storage spaces in the form of a master walk in closet and charming, of-the-era built-ins. The house was stripped to its studs and re-imagined to appear as though the house was always that way.
Historic details such as the Spanish arches, exposed wood ceiling beams, niched bookcases, arched fireplace, stucco walls and a variety of colorful talavera tile and Spanish-included cement tile patterns were reintroduced to the home. A full redesign of the front porch entrance, curb gate and landscape was also part of the project.
A galley kitchen and separate dark dining room was re-imagined to create a large, less compartmentalized space with a new wide folding glass wall connecting the indoor to the outdoor. The new layout made way for a bespoke light-filled dining nook, a spacious island, a charming built-in pantry and all new kitchen cabinetry.
The interior materials and furnishings are kept simple, organic and well made to reflect both a practical mid-century modern approach and a relaxed well traveled tropical vibe. With a healthy nod to the past while fully embracing its new coastal vibe, the home is truly a surfer’s paradise.
