a Book COLLECTOR'S SANCTUARY
A young family of four with an adorable, energetic pug was in need of an upgrade on their mid century-modern oceanfront home. This photographer/ book collector/ surf-enthusiast couple with Scandinavian roots and an appreciation for the counter culture gravitates toward a minimalist lifestyle with its clean, uncluttered aesthetic and natural palette.
We started by reversing the locations of the living room and dining room- keeping furnishings in low profile to not obstruct their stellar ocean views. The muted pastel color tones and organic textures would recede into the background and softly blend in with the misty, sandy shoreline.
Inspired by their hip, sneakerhead sense of style, we kept the design bright and airy, yet sprinkled in pops of color to keep it playful. The thin-framed open bookshelves handsomely display their favorite art books from their extensive collection, enhancing the minimalist theme.
For the original cinder block fireplace, we took a unique leap of faith by painting it a retro Mid-Century pistachio color to breathe fresh new life to the dining room corner. A monolithic concrete table shaped like a surfboard, paired with a mix of 1950s Norman chairs and black bucket seats, convey a modern take on the cool “Scandi-Cali” style of this beach home.
